I recently visited a very poignant and fascinating exhibition as well as a “Talk and Tour” at the Museum at FIT. It was none other than the fashion legend of today, Daphne Guinness.
For those of you who don’t know who she is well, she is more than just the heiress of the Guinness family. Daphne is a devoted collector of Haute Couture, a modern day Fashion and style Icon. She is an eccentric and powerful work of art herself.
At the Talk and Tour hosted by the museum Director and Curator Valerie Steele, I learned Daphne hand picked over 80 pieces of her own wardrobe for this exhibit. According to Valerie, Daphne was so gracious and very involved in the styling process of the mannequins for this presentation. Displayed were jewelry pieces (the jewelry displayed was costume only) her infamous platform shoes and a number of garments from Chanel, Lacroix, Balenciaga and of course McQueen. Daphne has an incredible wardrobe of over 2500 pieces that are meticulously cataloged in a database and stored between her New York and London homes. The collection was impressive and showed Daphne’s style essence and various of her inspirations elements. The exhibit is divided in six sections each representing an aspect of Daphne’s style. If you are in NYC I urge you to visit the Museum at FIT and step into a world of high fashion mixed with simplicity, eclectic and extreme elements all of which makes this the one of a kind world of Daphne Guinness.
